Updated: 2012-02-28 20:59:10: Ham Radio Tuesday , February 28, 2012 Day 28 February QSO Challenge My challenge for today was also a brand new experience for me as I have never tried to work anyone on the 30M band . before I tuned my FT-1000MKV to 10.141MHz and found quite a few stations coming in well on PSK31 with my Hustler vertical in . line Earlier in the QSO challenge , PE4BAS had commented in a previous post where I had used PSK31 Deluxe to make a QSO . Bas recommended DM780, so I thought I would give it a go on . 30M I made my first ever 30M QSO successfully running just 20W at 20.19 utc , when I worked Andy UW8SM from The Ukraine . Here it is . The BPW34 photodiode does not have any bias and is connected directly in the air to the gate of the FET . I have tried reverse biasing but it made little noticable difference to sensitivity . The cascode head is from KA7OEI and this is followed by an op-amp buffer and gain stage which feeds the PC . There is an additional stage of gain to drive a small crystal earpiece . Sadie A few hours ago , our cat Sadie passed away , peacefully in her . sleep It's never easy when a pet dies . Sadie's passing was even tougher as she was the first addition to our family after Marianne and I married back in 1998. Sadie was adopted and joined our family the very first week that we moved into our house that October . I'll never , ever forget when we met Sadie the first time . We went to a pet store and she was in a crate where she was waiting to be adopted .
